GREETINGS FROM PICKEREL CREEK

THE YEARS SEEM TO BE GOING BY FASTER EVERY YEAR, 2012 WAS NO EXCEPTION.  EVERY SEASON HAS BEEN BETTER THAN THE LAST.  OUR BUSINESS HAS BEEN GROWING LEAPS AND BOUNDS AND WITH THAT BEING SAID, BETTY AND I WOULD LIKE TO THANK EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU.  IF IT WEREN’T FOR THE SUPPORT OF OUR FRIENDS, FAMILY, AND GUEST, PICKEREL CREEK CAMP WOULD NOT BE WHERE IT IS TODAY. THANK YOU ALL! WE  HOPE THAT EVERYONE HAD A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A GREAT NEW YEAR.

FISHING

WHEN YOU GIVE A FISHING REPORT YOU NEED TO PAINT WITH A BROAD BRUSH, THERE ARE ALWAYS EXCEPTIONS.  2012 WALLEYE FISHING WAS GENERALLY SLOW.  FROM KENORA TO RED LAKE MOST REPORTS WERE NEGATIVE.  AN EARLY SPRING AND WARM WATER TEMPERATURES SOONER THAN NORMAL HAD THE MAKING OF A GREAT YEAR, BUT THAT WAS NOT THE CASE.  MUSKY FISHING WAS EXCELLENT EARLY IN THE YEAR, BUT AS THE SUMMER PROGRESSED MUSKYS SLOWED AS WELL.  SHORTY FLEES CAUGHT HIS PERSONAL BEST IN CANADA, AN AWESOME 51” FISH.  TROUT, BASS, AND WALLEYE HAD THEIR GOOD DAYS BUT NOTHING WAS CONSISTANT.  WE ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO LEAVING THIS PAST YEAR IN THE BOOKS AND WITH A NEW SEASON JUST AROUND THE CORNER WE ARE HOPING FOR BETTER LUCK.

HUNTING

2012 BEAR HUNT WAS BY FAR THE BEST YET FOR BIG BRUINS.  FOUR ANIMALS TAKEN WERE OVER 300 LBS. FIELD DRESSED AND ONE CLOSE TO 400LBS.  THE BEAR POPULATION WAS PREVALENT DURING THIS SEASON.   OUR BAITS WERE INCREDIBLY ACTIVE AND ALL HUNTERS ENJOYED SEEING BEAR.  THE ARCHERY MOOSE HUNT WAS FANTASTIC.  OUR HUNTERS WERE VERY SUCCESSFUL.  WHILE GUIDING TWO HUNTERS THIS FALL WE HEARD AND/OR SAW 15 BULLS AND 6 COWS.  THE GUN SEASON ON THE OTHER HAND WAS UNCHARACTERISTICLLY SLOW.  MORE TAGS WENT UNFILLED THAN EVER.  THE DEER HUNT WAS FILLED WITH MISSED OPORTUNITIES FOR SOME OF US. HOWEVER, WE DID MANAGE TO TAKE 2 THREE AND A HALF YEAR OLD BUCKS, BUT REALLY MISSED A COUPLE OF SMASHERS.  THE GROUSE NUMBERS ARE UP AND HUNTER NUMBERS ARE DOWN.  IT REALLY IS A GREAT TRIP TO FISH AND GROUSE HUNT IN NW ONTARIO IN SEPTEMBER…SOME OF YOU SHOULD CONSIDER IT.

OGANI OUTPOST

THE OUTPOST WAS THE SAVIOR FOR OUR FISHING REPORTS.  FROM OPENER TO THE END OF SEASON FISHING WAS FANTASTIC.  THE MALE WALLEYE NEVER SEEMED TO LEAVE THE RIVER AND FEMALES SHOWED UP IN GOOD NUMBERS IN SEPTEMBER LIKE ALWAYS.  SEVERAL PIKE OVER 40” WERE CAUGHT AND SOME CAME RIGHT OFF THE DOCK.  WE WERE ABLE TO PUT A NEW STEEL ROOF ON THE CABIN THIS FALL AND ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO GETTING A NEW PORCH ADDED THIS SPRING.  ARCHERY MOOSE SEASON WAS ASTONISHING, LOADED WITH OPPORTUNITY AND THE GUYS SAW A SURPLUS OF ANIMALS.  THE GUN SEASON WAS QUIET JUST LIKE THE ENTIRE REGION.

2013

THIS SPRING WE WILL HAVE FINISHED A NEW RENTAL AT PICKEREL CREEK CAMP WHICH HAS OPENED UP PRIME VACANCY DATES FOR THIS FISHING SEASON.  WE DO HAVE OPENNINGS AT THE OUTPOST IN JULY AND AUGUST BUT THE SPRING AND FALL DATES ARE BOOKED.  A FEW BEAR SPOTS ARE AVAILABLE AND LOOKING FOR A COUPLE OF DIE HARD DEER HUNTERS.  INTERESTED MOOSE HUNTERS SHOULD CALL AND TALK TO DAVE.  WE ARE BOOKED THROUGH 2016, BUT WE DO KNOW OF TAGS AVAILABLE FROM OTHER OUTFITTERS.

THE 2013 SEASON IS ONLY A FEW SHORT MONTHS AWAY AND WE LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING ALL OF YOU VERY SOON.  THANK YOU ONCE AGAIN FROM THE BOTTOM OF OUR HEARTS.

WARMS REGARDS TO ALL OF YOU,

DAVID AND BETTY FRANKOVICH
