Happy New Year

31 12 2015

Many of you received hard copies of our end of year Holiday letter but for those of you who did not here is a snap shot version.

The year of 2015 at Pickerel Creek Camp was definitely one for the history books. Thanks to all of our customers, friends and family for your friendships, loyalty and generosity. Tourism in Northwestern Ontario has regained its strength. We are very grateful and happy to see so many people having an opportunity to enjoy this beautiful area that we are so lucky to call home.

A hat trick year for fishing. The last 3 years have been excellent fishing throughout NW Ontario. The size and number of fish that are being caught is world class. Whether we are fishing bush lakes or larger bodies of water the fisheries are strong and getting stronger, especially where excellent conservation practices are imposed. Average to late springs with cool water temperatures are some of the reasons for such an active fish bite. Let’s shoot for four in a row, see you in 2016.

Bear hunting is usually always good and has too many stories to tell each year. Everyone in camp saw bear this year and most had good opportunities to harvest their animal. The Ministry of Natural Resources is seriously thinking about bringing back the spring bear hunt. We will be running a hunt as soon as we get the go ahead. Due to being full with fisherman in the spring our hunt would be conducted in our north area. Moose hunting was exciting as always. Our hunters had several great chances at arrowing mature Bull Moose but the magnificent animals won out this year. In a nut shell, that is how bow hunting goes. We will be offering a rifle hunt for Bull Moose in 2016. Grouse numbers were way up this year, everyone that hunted for grouse this year had a ball! Mix a little fall fishing with grouse hunting and you have a great getaway. Betty and I are excited to announce that we will be outfitting wolf hunts in 2016. Our first hunts will start in March.

Ogani Outpost

Ogani Outpost has been such a great addition to PCC. Fishing is usually always excellent and this year was no different. Repeat guest are really cashing in and finding out just how to fish the abundance of water available. Always big numbers of fish but our anglers are putting patterns together to boat many mature fish well over 20 inches. The northern pike fishery remains strong with several mid-forties fish being caught. The new 60 foot dock that we installed this spring was a big hit, several more upgrades coming but don’t worry Betty is making me keep it rustic as well.

Parting Words
We have a few new additions planned for next year. Our biggest change will be the 24 x 32 screened in pavilion.  Plans to have a kitchen set up at one end with propane cooking, deep fryers and an old wood burning cook stove that we stumbled across this year will be a start. There will be picnic tables and we are hoping to install a fire pit for bon fires. The bathroom in Cabin #2 was remodeled at the end of this season. Updates to a few cabins are planned as well.
Wishing you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy Holiday Season. We are looking forward to seeing you in 2016.
May this winter and spring find you, your families and loved ones in good health with much happiness!
