Hello April

4 04 2016

With April 1st already past we are only about 6 weeks away from the start of the 2016 fishing season .  Backing up a bit we have to tell you that we had a successful wolf hunt in March.  Although our hunters did not take an animal home they did get to see wolves and triggers were actually pulled.  We were unsuccessful at recovering one animal and two other wolves caught two hunters before they got off a shot.  One of our hunters had the thrill of seeing a pack of 11 wolves come out on the ice to his bait.  We will be running a hunt again in 2017 but have limited spots.

Ice fishing has actually been pretty good for our group of friends.  In NW Ontario you will always get mixed reports ice fishing.  Time of year and species targeted vary from lake to lake.  Its amazing lakes that you may think are awesome in June and they may be, but are really tough to catch a fish in through the ice.  We were able to find a few new walleye lakes for ice fishing and joined the rest of the crowd finding the crappie in the area.  I remember writing a blog a few years ago about crappie and how they have expanded in our area.  Well, it is no secret now nor is it a secret where they are being caught through the ice.  The next challenge will be finding crappie where you have the spot to yourself.  Trout fishing on the right body of water has been excellent, much slower this time of year on some.  Walleye season will be closing mid-month and the evening bite is still the best opportunity to get a nice feed of cold water eye’s.  We went into the fall with high water so many of your feeder creeks and systems have been flowing for quite sometime.  Looking at the long-range forecast for what its worth, looks like we should have average ice out or slightly early.  We still have 16 inches of good clear ice on average and it doesn’t look like we will have a melt any time real soon.
